Matteo Garrone's GOMORRAH is a dense, sprawling expos� of the corruption plaguing the communities of Naples and Caserta in modern-day Italy. The all-powerful Camorra syndicate influences the lives of even the most innocent citizens. In a manner similar to THE WIRE, Garrone tells his story from many different angles, resulting in a complicated narrative that often feels novelistic. In many cases, the revolving stories never overlap or intersect. While that may be jarring to those viewers who are used to having their strings tied neatly for them by a film's conclusion, Garrone's decision results in an experience that feels much more honest and true. We witness the syndicate's impact from the top down and from the inside out, following a cavalcade of characters who are all trying in their own ways to escape the deadly world in which they live.

Based on the book by Roberto Saviano, Garrone's crime epic is a powerful indictment of the corruption that is running rampant in Italy. His decision to present such a wide spectrum of characters enables him to show just how deeply everyone is impacted by this terrifying, unchecked display of criminal power. Cinematically, he employs a dizzying array of styles in order to further establish the frighteningly ungoverned atmosphere that pervades this community. This film addresses broader themes of how people really know each other and the importance of connecting with family, no matter how crazy they might be. Vaughn and Witherspoon have nice chemistry as a couple that thought they had everything they wanted, improvising and playing off of each other well. Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek appear as Brad's parents, while Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen play Kate's parents. Jon Favreau and Tim McGraw are a hoot as Brad's tormenting brothers, and Kristen Chenoweth fits the bill as Kate's sister. Parents should be aware that the film includes adult language and themes, and some comments about Santa that may upset young children. (1 hr. 20 min.)

Upon investigation she learns the story of the drum, which entails a flashback to the unfortunate life of a boy named Gnod, whose unfortunate love for his sister and even more unfortunate appearance led to a lasting curse. "Black Magic Woman" is the tale of Pan, a lonely young woman who turns to a miraculous love potion in order to seduce men. It works like a charm, until the side effects begin to emerge. The last segment, "Revenge," is directed by Oxide Pang (THE EYE), and follows a detective investigating the death of a young woman. Although she is believed by the rest of the force to have been a suicide, the detective finds himself compelled to look deeper into the case, perhaps guided by a force beyond the grave.

Jack Daumier (Gabriel Mann) is a journalist who has just been hired to write for The Valley Standard, a newspaper in San Jose, California, published by Albion Munson (Pete Postlethwaite). While much of the country is mired in the Great Depression, San Jose's agricultural industry is prospering, and Jack mostly finds himself covering fluffy, inconsequential stories. He thinks he's following another one when he's asked to attend a party thrown by Horace and Natalie Walsh (Bruce McGill and Diana Scarwid) in honor of their son, Blake Walsh (Joe Mandragona), who has been named second-in-command at Horace's successful department store. Jack thinks meeting Blake's beautiful sister, Helen (Emily Harrison), is the high point of the evening until Blake disappears after stepping out for a moment. Horace is later contacted by kidnappers, who are holding Blake for ransom. As local and federal authorities squabble over how to handle the case and rival reporters from around the state invade San Jose to cover the kidnapping, two men are arrested and charged with the crime. A handful of powerful local businessmen are determined to see that "justice is served" and are ready to take the law into their own hands, but Jack speaks to a witness who makes a compelling case for the innocence of the accused men, and decides he has to intervene to insure their safety.
